Ukrainian female scientists are worthy of being known for their significant contribution to the world of science and the sacrifices they took to accomplish the scientific activity. SHE is SCIENCE is the educational project which shows it and talks about it. The founder of the Roosh technology company and the initiator of SHE is SCIENCE, Sergey Tokarev, commented on the success of the project, its current activity, and plans.
Current project’s promotion
The educational art project SHE is SCIENCE came up as a response to gender injustice in science. In order to attract the Ukrainian public to this problem, the project organizers decided to choose an innovative way to promote their ideas by using modern tools in communications. Thus, the art collection of twelve remarkable heroines was created with the help of contemporary illustrators. They could illustrate not only the appearance of heroines but also their character and activity.
Now, the art gallery of portraits of 12 Ukrainian female scientists can be visited in the innovation park UNIT.City in Kyiv. According to Sergey Tokarev, the exhibition will get its permanent “place of residence” in autumn. The organizers will announce it later. After the official part of the project, the organizers orchestrated the tour to promote gender equality in science across the country and present copies of the exhibition for free to different institutions that want to hold the exposition in their locations.
Thus, the SHE is SCIENCE exhibition visited the first cities like Zaporizhzhia, Mariupol, and Kryvyi Rih. There, SHE is SCIENCE was presented as part of STEAM-CAMP, the leadership educational program for teachers. Then, the Vinnytsia region, the famous historical station of Kozyatyn, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine hosted the exhibition.
Moreover, Sergey Tokarev adds that the project curators are moving on globally to show the world the significant impact of Ukrainian heroines on science. Appropriate negotiations are held with Ukrainian embassies in the EU and other countries.
Project’s mission
Sergey Tokarev is a famous businessman for running a well-known social project STEM is FEM. It aims to promote technical education among Ukrainian schoolgirls. But over time, he understood it was not enough to improve the gender situation in the STEM world. That is why SHE is SCIENCE was created as an additional motivation and support for schoolgirls to grow and develop in the technical direction.
The project would not have had success if the innovations were not implemented. Being aware of modern challenges, the entrepreneur and the project team chose an impressive way to appeal to the public’s attention. Thus, they provided a fantastic gallery of 12 portraits of project heroines. The experienced figures were invited to the project who could “animate” the image of each heroine. They are Sergiy Maidukov, Anna Ivanenko, Anna Sarvira, Olga Degtyareva, and Jenya Polosina.
In addition to the visual arts, the organizers provided an essay competition among girls aged 14 to 21. As a result, they received 561 works, and some of them came even from abroad. Thus, the best 12 essays of the project were determined and became an important part of further exhibitions.
On June 10, the official part of the project took place. The charity auction was held, and more than $43,000 was sent to the winners’ education expenses. Moreover, the event was attended by the First Lady of the country Olena Zelenska and some foreign guests: diplomats from France, Belgium, the United States, representatives of UN Women, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and NATO.
